This week Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the US legislature’s lower house, suggested to President Donald Trump that he postpone an annual address to lawmakers.
Now Trump has written to her — in apparent retaliation — to deny her use of military aircraft for a trip abroad.
“Obviously if you would like to make your journey by flying commerical, that would certainly be your prerogative,” Donald Trump wrote as he informed Pelosi her trip had been postponed.
“In light of the 800,000 great American workers not receiving pay, I am sure you would agree that postponing this public relations event is totally appropriate,” he said.

Nancy Pelosi was scheduled to travel on a military aircraft as part of a congressional delegation to Belgium — where the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato) is based — and Afghanistan to visit US troops stationed there.
Now why, you ask, did she earlier ask Trump to postpone his State of the Union address (or deliver it in writing)?
She cited concerns over the capacity of the Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service to safeguard the Capitol (which houses the US legislature) during the event.
The agency later said it was capable of securing the venue.
Today, I wrote to @realDonaldTrump recommending that we delay the State of the Union until after government re-opens, as the @SecretService, the lead federal agency for #SOTU security, faces its 26th day without funding. https://t.co/K2oL8WGvqo pic.twitter.com/g3fIlxDbbK

With Donald Trump’s letter to Nancy Pelosi, his conflict with her fellow partymen — the Democrats — over a partial US government shutdown has escalated.
About one quarter of central US agencies have been shuttered since December 22, with Democratic lawmakers refusing to accede to Trump’s demands to pay for a wall along the US border with Mexico.
Trump is holding out for $ 5.7 billion for a border wall. Democrats, who took over the US House of Representatives (the lower house of the legislature) this month, have rejected his demands,
They’ve said there there are cheaper and more effective ways of enhancing border security.
