PM Narendra Modi said his government dedicates the Swachh Bharat Mission to Mahatma Gandhi.
Speaking about the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said when the scheme was being launched, people raised apprehensions that this is destined to fail.
“People were asking why a government should spend so much on sanitation. It has many other works to do on priority,” Modi said.
The PM said in the past few years, the sanitation scheme has proved to be a game changer.
“Today, the World Bank is saying that 3 lakh children were saved from dying because of the government’s emphasis on sanitation schemes.”

He said at a time when international organisations are lauding the scheme, which Indian would not want to associate with this drive that is aimed at making the country clean. “Saving the lives of 3 lakh poor children is a matter of pride for all of us,” he said.
Dedicating the scheme to Mahatma Gandhi, PM Modi said this is a tribute to the father of nation who had dreamt of a clean and healthy India.
“In his life, Bapu (Gandhi) laid more importance to sanitation than independence. Next year we will celebrate 150 th birth anniversary of Gandhi ji. In his life, he created a force of satyagrahi, we will create a force of swacchagrahi as tribute to him.”
