Prime Minister Narendra Modi met an old-time friend and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activist Madan Gopal alias Chacha ji in Chandigarh on Tuesday.
Madan Gopal is Chandigarh BJP office in-charge and lives in Chandigarh.
After retiring from Border Security Force (BSF) as a subedar in 1971, Madan Gopal joined the BJP.
Madan Gopal would prepare tea, cook dal-chawal (lentils and rice) whenever the then in-charge of BJP Narendra Modi would come to Chandigarh.
Narendra Modi used to call him Chacha ji.
On Tuesday, Madan Gopal was one of the six people whom Prime Minister Narendra Modi met. While PM Modi shook hands with five others, he gave a tight hug to Madan Gopal when he saw him after a long time.
Narendra Modi on Twitter wrote, “Coming back to Chandigarh is about several memories and familiar faces. After today’s rally, I met Madan ji, who was an integral part of the BJP office when I lived here. Enquired about his health and well-being. Happy to see the same level of passion and positivity in him.”

“He enquired about my family, my children and my life. I told him that my sons work in PGI and Municipal Corporation Chandigarh. He [Modi] invited me to come to New Delhi after the elections are over,” Madan Gopal said.
According to Chandigarh BJP chief, Sanjay Tandel, Madan Gopal is very hardworking and despite being 75 years old, he continues to work for a party with dedication and zeal.
“It is a Diwali-like atmosphere at Madan Gopal’s home. Not only Madan Gopal and his family members but every BJP party worker is feeling respected as Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered a common party worker like Chacha ji,” Sanjay Tandon said.
Madan Gopal originally hails from Kalka town of Haryana.
Madan Gopal, however, settled with his sons in Chandigarh. Madan Gopal also worked for Prime Minister Narendra Modi during Gujarat elections when he was chief minister.
Narendra Modi had also met Madan Gopal in Una, Himachal Pradesh after he became the Prime Minister.
“Modi’s hug means a lot to me. I am proud of him and he is my hero. I wish he becomes the prime minister again,” Madan Gopal Gautam added.
