Prime Minster Narendra Modi today delivered the annual Independence Day speech from the Red Fort in Delhi — an address that lasted around 90 minutes, covering a wide range of topics including the economy and the Kashmir issue.
Modi also made a few major announcements in his Independence Day address, including plans to send an Indian manned mission to space.
But what did the prime minister really focus on? The answer: Farmers, the poor, rural India, and — of course — cleanliness.
How do we know this? Well, we got down to counting the number of times Prime Minister Modi repeated a word in his Independence Day speech.
The word he mentioned most was “poor” or, in Hindi, “garib”. This was in line with his previous Independence Day speeches — all of which focused majorly on the poor.
While the word “garib” was the one PM Modi repeated most often in his Independence Day address, it was the topic of farmers and rural India that PM Modi spoke about the most.
The prime minister mentioned “kisan” or ” farmer” 14 times, “gaon” or “village” 22 times, and “krishi” or “agriculture” 11 times.
Black money (“kala dhan”) was mentioned twice; the fight against unaccounted wealth s one of the Modi government’s oft-talked-about issues. Cleanliness — another topic of pride for the government — was mentioned 11 times.
“Employment” (“rojgar”) was mentioned four times and “jobs” (“naukriya”) was mentioned just once.
And, how does this year’s word cloud analysis of PM Modi’s Independence Day speech compare to the previous years? Well, the theme was more or less similar, but with a slightly sharper focus on farmers and rural India. See this table for more:
